Dance West in Concert 2013
April19-21
Beaverton Arts and Communication Magnet Academy’s DANCE WEST, promises a diverse evening of choreographic works from nationally renowned choreographers, as well as the fresh creative talents of up and coming artists. From classical ballet to tap and hip-hop, this young company, under the direction of Julane Stites, performs with amazing technical ability and heart. Excerpts from "Coppelia”, choreographed by Jason Davis, will be performed with special guests The ACMA Classical Orchestra, under the direction of MaryAnn Campbell. "Concerto Grosso", an exceptional contemporary ballet set for Dance West by Jennifer and Juan Carlos Amy-Cordero of The Eugene Ballet, will debut. The sensual "C Smooth" tap, originally choreographed by Julane Stites and Terry Brock, has been refreshed and remounted for 2013's concert by Ms. Brock. The creative efforts of three alumni will be featured: Andres Peraza, studying at Cornish College of The Arts, Tariq Mitri, studying at Cal Arts and Nick Katen finishing up his final year at NYU's Tisch School for the Arts. In addition, five of our current seniors have new works, which have been selected to demonstrate our philosophy of fostering the creative process at a young age. A highlight of the evening is "Bitter Sweet", featuring the exquisite music of Roberta Flack and choreography by Jamel Gaines, a "So you Think You Can Dance” guest choreographer on season 7. "Village Afar", featuring the brilliant work of Kemba Shannon, not only displays the diverse ability of the dancers, but, equally as important, it demonstrates one of the prevailing philosophies of ACMA; that through the integration of the arts with core subject matter, history and the human condition can be powerfully partnered for enduring understanding.
